LYSTERFIELD VIC, 3156
Until the 1990s, Lysterfield was primarily a rural region 35 km southeast of Melbourne, bordered by Ferntree Gully to the north, Narre Warren to the south, and Rowville to the west. It comprises low mountains, a basin where many watercourses empty into Lysterfield Lake, and a lush valley along Monbulk Creek. Monbulk Township is located several kilometres to the northeast. After a Mr Lyster accepted an early land grant, Lysterfield was given its name. His homestead was the home that Mr and Mrs Geo. Hyden currently lives in. 100 years ago, Messrs. Selman and Nixon (Mrs Brandt’s father) bought land in Lysterfield.
Today, Lysterfield is most likely recognised for its lake, which was once known as Lysterfield Reservoir. Due to delays brought on by the Great Depression, construction on this reservoir didn’t finish until 1936, seven years after it started. Lysterfield was a component of a larger scheme to supply water to the Flinders Naval Base, the Mornington Peninsula, and Frankston. In Lysterfield, residents raise alpacas and grow various crops, including a sizable sprout farm. Lysterfield’s centre, which features a farm shop and a gas station that advertises “great acreage,” reflects the town’s rural setting. Visit Lysterfield to enjoy the best of nature!
